Earth Month at Kids for Saving Earth

By Kids for Saving Earth

Earth month is always so important to Kids for Saving Earth. Thanks to founder of Earth Day, Senator Gaylord Nelson, Earth month has become a festive 30-day celebration to honor and protect the Earth. I’m hearing from schools all over the US and Canada and throughout the world including India, Pakistan, Sweden, England, France, Australia. Everyone wants to use April to teach students how to protect and honor the Earth. This makes me very happy!

Kids for Saving Earth provides educational materials helping teachers empower and inspire kids to protect the Earth. My son, 11-year -old Clinton Hill, started Kids for Saving Earth one year before he died from a malignant brain tumor. His belief that kids could work with adults to save the Earth was my inspiration to provide teachers and parents the tools to do just that. I was a teacher and am a parent and I know they’re very busy people and have a lot to fit into their schedules. I have found ways to make it easy to begin and easy to fit the activities into all types of curricula day after day.

365 Earth Days

By Free Rangers Bath

Being asked to write a piece about Earth Day has given me the opportunity to reflect on the “Earth Days” I have been a part of over the years.

Where I used to teach, Earth Day was celebrated somewhat begrudgingly. It was a case of one teacher being lumbered with motivating all staff and children to consider their place on this planet and what it might mean by carrying out an activity that had a loose connection with “doing your bit.” One year in particular sticks in my mind. The year in question celebrated Earth Day with the whole school attempting to get through the day without using the three photocopiers on site.

Don’t get me wrong on many levels this was a valiant attempt at encouraging us to reflect on the endless and often pointless amount of photocopying that took place in school as well as demonstrating the fact that things can be done on a local scale and also be worthwhile. However, by golly these days were dull and the children, especially the younger pupils could not tell you why on earth (like what I’ve done there?) we were doing what we were doing.

Saving the Earth…One Craft at a Time!

By Two Sisters Creations

TwoSisters officially opened our crafting store January 2012. Geneva and Angela, two sisters…actually twins. We get together every other weekend – we think we craft better together – goofy huh? Well, that is twins for you :-) And if we can do our part to help save the Earth in the process, even better! ;-)

We work separately most of the time, but we are always at our best when we get to have time to craft together. That’s when the creative juices really start flowing and we have a blast!

We love to feature eco-friendly items in our craft and get even more ridiculously happy when we save things from the landfill! It is a crazy frame of mind that we look at something bound for the trash, and “Ooooh, that could be a great…” I have to warn you, it is contagious!

THIS is Where Imagination Can Take You…

It all started last summer when Caine spent every day at his dad’s auto parts store in L.A. There wasn’t much for him to do there and he started to mess around with all those boxes his dad had piled in the back. Caine decided he would build his own arcade. Out of cardboard. And build he did.

Caine’s Arcade from Nirvan Mullick on Vimeo.

3 days ago this short film, Caine’s Arcade, by Nirvan, was released. As of today it has been viewed on Vimeo almost 2 million times. In less than 48 hours, the site dedicated to Caine’s Arcade raised over $100,000 (and growing!) for a college fund for Caine. I get goosebumps when I think about how incredible all this is.

I’ve been thinking about Caine, his arcade, and the power of imagination incessantly over the past couple days.  As parents, we always want to give our kids every opportunity, make sure they are happy, and do everything we can to ensure they have a great life. It’s our job. But sometimes I wonder if we do too much. Our kids are bored and they come to us, and then we often entertain them or come up with a constant stream of activities for them. Is that truly good for them?

Happy Family Habits

By The Happy Family Movement

Whether we realize it or not, the little things we do with our kids on a daily or weekly basis make up the culture of our family. We like to call these things our ‘happy family habits’. We’re using happy family habits to foster a close-knit, loving family and you can too!

We have tons of happy family habits that we incorporate into our everyday life with our kids. I’ll share some of our favorites to get you started and I’m certain you’ll realize that your family already has a number of happy family habits. The key is to keep adding new habits!

One of our longest standing happy family habits is our nightly snuggle chats. Every night, we lay down with each of our kids and talk about their day. We ask questions and mostly just listen. It’s a great time to learn the little things that they did that day and also the perfect time to talk about life in general. We’ve been doing it for years and I sure hope that when they’re teenagers, this tradition helps keep the communication open!

One of the kids’ favorite happy family habits is our tickle fights. These manifest in many ways… straight up tickling, tickle chase, pillow fights, etc. We figure anytime the whole family is laughing, that has to be a good thing. We have tickle fights often, but they work especially well when one or more members of the family is grumpy!

Another one of our happy family habits is reading. We read to the kids all the time and encourage them to read to each other. There’s pretty much nothing better than seeing your kids snuggled up together reading to each other! Max also helped Ava learn to read and both of them are working with Lia on her reading. I hope these habits help foster the kind of close sibling relationships that we want for our kids.

While you’re there, we hope you’ll join our movement! You can find us on Twitter (@happyfammvmt), Facebook, and the web (http://thehappyfamilymovement.com)!

Free to Fly (Thank you, Imagination)

By HappyJulieHmker

If you could be anything, what would it be?

Sky: © A454 | Stock Free Images & Dreamstime Stock Photos

I always wanted to be a bird.  Watching them glide through the air so effortlessly, free to explore the skies.  I grew up with many medical challenges from a congenital spinal birth defect called which brought many surgeries, pain and time away from my siblings and friends. The one thing I could do, even with casts on my legs, was to swing on our swing set.  I remember learning to pump my legs to go higher and faster.  When I needed a little help, my twin brother innately jumped off his swing to give me a push.  Together, we would swing back and forth, back and forth.  My favorite thing to do was tilt my body back and enjoy losing myself in the looking at the sky and enjoying the repetitive back and forth motion of swinging.  I watched the birds soar through the sky and at those moments, on our swing set, I felt akin to them, free in the vast sky.  The swinging motion calmed me and was an escape where my imagination guided the way instead of doctor’s appointments and surgeries.  In those moments I was “free” to explore the sky.  I suppose that’s where my adoration of the sky originates.  My Mom would come get me for dinner.  I never stopped the swing with my feet on the ground.  I allowed it to slowly lose momentum and gently slide off the seat.  Happy to my core, I went in the house for dinner.  Oh how I enjoyed our swing set and times shared with the sky and birds.

Raising Happy Kids…Outside!

By Tales of a Mountain Mama

Keeping kids (especially toddlers) happy can be tough at times.  It’s a fact of life that melt-downs are going to happen, tears will be shed and strong willed-toddlers will meet strong-willed Mamas (or Papas!)  And that is ok!

The simple truth that I have found time and time again to be true is that my kids (and ANY kid that has ever been in our home or I have run across) are happier when they get time outside.  And this is certainly not limited to toddlers/infants.   I thoroughly believe adults and teens need just as much outdoor time as little ones.

I will be the first to admit that my own children become first-rate monsters when they are cooped up indoors all day (or even MOST of the day).  They don’t problem solve, they cry over every little thing, they have no idea how to play on their own and they get that dazed-over look in their eyes.  Yep, even the 9-month-old.

Fresh air does wonders.  My kids are happier, sweeter and sleep better.  I have discovered that it is absolutely worth the time it takes to gear them up in winter (or summer, for that matter!) for the sanity of our entire family.

We don’t have a fancy play space.  We don’t even have any green grass (well except maybe a 4 square foot patch that stays green about a month in the spring.)  While a manicured yard on the edge of the National Forest would be simply lovely, we take what we have and have a great time doing it.

Here are a few of our favorite grass-free outdoor games:
